Your Final Opportunity to Experience The Heiress: Sargent’s American Portraits at Kenwood House
This unmissable exhibition at Kenwood House, which closes on the 5th October, features portraits by the celebrated artist John Singer Sargent. It highlights the so-called “dollar princesses” – wealthy American women who married into the British aristocracy.
The exhibition reveals a side to Sargent’s work not often explored: the real lives of his sitters, including a future wartime nurse, a pioneering helicopter pilot, and Britain’s first female MP to take her seat in Parliament.
It also serves as a tribute to Sargent (1856–1925), the most sought-after portraitist of the Gilded Age. His portraits demonstrate his mastery of the art form at a time when the foundations of the special relationship between Britain and America were being laid.
